The Toxic God is an available god to worship in Schism. You can select this god in the temple, either via the holy machine, or by using an altar in the first floor.

This god is themed around stacking large amounts of poison onto enemies over time, using various methods. The player starts with +3 POISON at favor level 0, and can boost this amount by surviving combat rooms while diseased and dealing poison damage, both of which increase faith and XP. The starting active relic is Toxic Smoke.

After choosing this god, the player becomes afflicted by 3 random diseases. They have random severities of 1-3 and last forever, but can be cured in some circumstances. The player is also burdened by 1 additional permanent disease every 3 favor levels.

Faith/XP Gained = Total Severity Points + (Total Severity Points x FAI) x 0.5

Faith and XP are accumulated by surviving combat encounters while diseased, and by dealing poison damage. The player gains 1 point of faith and XP for every point of severity across all of their diseases after completing a combat encounter (e.g. 3 diseases with 2 severity each grant 6 faith/XP.) These yields from surviving rooms can be increased by investing in the FAI stat.

Faith/XP Gained = (Poison DMG + (Poison DMG x FAI) / 2) x 0.005

An extra 0.005 points of faith and XP are awarded for every point of poison damage dealt to enemies. Faith and XP granted for poison damage can also be increased with the player's FAI stat.

As the player gains faith, the Toxic god will increase its favor level. Every favor level boosts POISON by 2, and every 3 favor levels grants another permanent disease with severity 1-3.

God Relics

The Toxic god grants the relic Toxic Smoke when chosen in the temple, which is an active relic that can place poison clouds at the cursor's position. Additionally, every 3 favor levels, the god delivers themed relics to the player that further increase poison damage dealt.

The Toxic god has a chance to deliver the Cubozoa Fang to the player, a stackable relic that grants +4 POISON for each copy. If all other relics have already been obtained, then only the Cubozoa Fang will be delivered every 3 favor levels.

Tips

  • Increasing your LCK stat is vital for the benefits of poison to work, since the chance of attacks applying poison is directly linked to the level of LCK you have.
  • As this god is highly focused on dealing poison damage to clear rooms, weapons with high ATKSPD are recommended. The numerous amounts of projectiles per second can overwhelm enemies and especially bosses with high stacks of poison, which can win fights if your weapons are otherwise weak and ineffective.
  • The weapon Serpent Daggers is extremely potent when combined with the Toxic god's favor returns and god relics. Since the weapon always applies poison on hit, independent of LCK, it can prove very effective in both damage and faith/XP gain.
  • Permanent diseases inflicted by the Toxic god (and any other source) are not truly permanent; they can be cured just like any other disease, via memories and/or the Hygeniust.
  • Although permanent diseases are able to be cured, this is not recommended in the early-game. Curing your diseases this early can stunt your growth and scaling for the deeper floors of the game. Hold off on cures until the late-game, where faith gain and the FAI stat are not as influential to the run.
  • Memories that inflict diseases can be beneficial in particular situations. If a disease imprinted on a memory is not particularly dangerous, such as Tinnitus, it may be worth intentionally using the memory for extra faith in the early-game.
  • Levelling down favor via usage of the Faith No More card will not remove permanent diseases, if used while favor level is at a multiple of 3. By the same token, levelling favor back to a multiple of 3 will inflict the player with another permanent disease.
  • Diseases will also not be removed if the player switches from the Toxic God to another.

Notes

  • It is possible to be given a set of diseases that are much more detrimental than usual when combined with each other. An example is a combination of External Trauma and Burning Alive, which forces the player to strike a balance between moving and standing still to avoid damage.
  • The same disease can be granted two or even three times in a row in rare cases when selecting the Toxic god. Diseases of the same type will stack with one another.
  • Inflicting poison damage on decorations, endless enemy spawns ect. will not grant favor or XP.
  • Criminally Insane is technically a disease and will therefore contribute to faith/XP gain after clearing a room.
