Ninefold relic at 9 lives
The relic displays revives left in the inventory.

Ninefold Path Guide is a relic in Schism. When picked up, it gives the player the ability to revive on death, up to nine times.

The amount of health given after a revive starts at 10 HP, and can be increased with a higher INT stat. After all nine revives have been used up, the item stops providing benefits to the player, although it is not removed from their inventory.

Synergies & Interactions

+ Positive, = Neutral, - Negative

Relics

  • + Scholar's Mask: The INT gained from the mask when the player reaches 0 HP will apply to the health on revive, which circumvents the low HP penalty of the Ninefold Path Guide.
  • + Quantum Immortality Textbook: The 50% chance to revive is checked first before Ninefold Path Guide. If this check succeeds, the player will revive at full health. If this check fails, then a life is consumed and the player revives at low health instead.
  • + Eternalism Scripture: The free revives granted by Eternalism Scripture will activate first over Ninefold Path Guide, so long as the player has enough MP.

Gods

  • = Death: The free revives granted by the god will activate first before the revives given by the relic.

Cards

  • + Plan S: Allows the player to receive the full benefits of the card without dying, should the player have at least one revive remaining.
  • = New Soul Revival: The free revive granted by New Soul Revival will activate first before the revives given by the relic.

Tips

  • Because this relic does not disappear after running out of lives, it can be rerolled or discarded safely in certain events when it stops working.
  • There is no indication of a revive having occurred during combat. Be wary of your health and the number of revives you have remaining.
  • In some situations, you may choose to purposefully die and revive to gain extra rewards. For example, you can use blood money machines more times than usual, for some extra gold in desperate times.

Notes

  • There is a predetermined order for revives to activate, regardless of when they were picked up during the run.
  • The New Soul Revival card comes first if the player is currently holding one.
  • If the player is not holding this card, then the Quantum Immortality Textbook will attempt to revive the player.
  • If this fails, then the Eternalism Scripture will consume the player's MP and prevent death.
  • If the player does not have enough MP, then the revives from the Death God will activate.
  • Finally, if all of the above do not activate, then the Ninefold Path Guide will consume a life and prevent the player's death, as long as there are lives remaining.
  • If the player collects this relic early and obtains a high amount of other relics afterwards, the number of revives remaining may become obscured, due to the inventory scrolling to display the new relics. As of Update 0.1.9, the player can use the mouse wheel to scroll through their collected relics, and view the number of lives remaining.
  • Allies are excluded from all forms of reviving.

Trivia

  • This relic is a reference to the item 'Dead Cat' in the video game franchise The Binding of Isaac, and functions similarly. In turn, both of these items are themselves references to the common superstition of cats having nine lives.
  • The name 'Ninefold Path Guide' is a reference to the Noble Eightfold Path, a set of eight goals in Buddhism that must be completed before an individual can achieve nirvana.
