Cards are a type of pickup in Schism. They are a kind of consumable that can be obtained and carried by the player, at a limit of two cards held at any time. When used by pressing the Card button, they grant a unique one-time effect depending on the type of card used, ranging in potency from 'Heal between 10-25 HP,' to 'Next attack kills whatever it hits.' After using a card, it disappears from the player's inventory, although a select few relics can change or prevent this.

Cards start face down after spawning, and are permanently revealed after being picked up. The player can also swap cards into their inventory, if picking up another card would put them over the limit. Cards that are swapped out are dropped onto the floor, and are permanently face-up for ease of distinguishing them in the future.

List of Cards

For more information on card probability mechanisms, visit the Card Probabilities page.

As of Update 0.1.5, there are a total of 44 cards in the game to be discovered. Cards can be found from many different sources, including chest drops, shopping districts, and the Mass Produced Booster Pack and Limited Booster Pack relics. Each card also has assigned rarity tiers, which determines the rate at which they appear compared to other cards.

The different available rarity tiers for cards are Common, Rare, Epic and Legendary. Cards with higher tiers are much more potent, but are progressively less likely to spawn than cards with lower tiers.

Tips

  • Even if a card's effect is very underwhelming, you are almost always better off using it rather than not. For instance, if you do not feel comfortable saving a Mass Weaken card until the boss, you can choose to use them in regular combat rooms instead.
  • LCK increases the amount of chests the player finds regularly, thus increasing the amount of cards the player can potentially receive. If you are in need of cards (i.e. to use with Dealer Psy,) consider placing points into LCK to find more cards.

Notes

  • Roughly speaking, the odds for Common, Rare, Epic and Legendary cards are about 72%, 18%, 7.2% and 2.8% respectively. Cards of higher tiers gain middling amounts of extra chance to generate compared to lesser tier cards, for every LCK point of the player.
  • The mechanism for generating cards in Schism is complex, arguably to the point where a dedicated page on the wiki is needed. Please visit the Card Probabilities page for more information.
  • If the player is carrying only 1 card, they can still press the Swap Card button to swap it into the secondary slot. This has no purpose in gameplay other than to keep the card safe if the player accidentally presses the Card button.
  • Memories are similar to cards, with some key differences. Only a set amount of memories can spawn during each run, and their effects are generally random and unknown until the player uses them for the first time. After that, the effects of used memories are revealed, should they spawn later in the same run.

Trivia

  • In popular culture, especially modern card games, cards often trigger unique effects when used, that often grant strategic advantage to the player who used them. Cards in Schism are a spiritual continuation of this popular trope.
