The Gold Steel is a weapon in Schism. It is a revolver with a golden barrel and trigger, plus a decorated white & red grip. When fired, it shoots an ordinary bullet projectile with very low damage, that rolls for a 50% chance for killed enemies to drop a coin on death. As long as the weapon is held by the player, any other sources of damage will also allow enemies to drop coins. However, allies are the only exception to this.

When scrapped, the payout is considerably higher in contrast to other weapons in the game, at around 4x the price of a weapon with equivalent upgrades and mods. However, this also influences the price of upgrading or adding mods to the Gold Steel.

Synergies & Interactions

+ Positive, = Neutral, - Negative

Relics

  • + Bank Psy: Coin drops can be invested into Bank Psy for high returns next floor.
  • + 'Currency Shop' Record: Every coin drop collected from killed enemies increases the ATK of the player.
  • + Gold Psy: Enemies killed by Gold Psy can still roll for coin drops while Gold Steel is held in hand, resulting in potentially unlimited uses.
  • + Jingly Keys: The bonus LCK from Jingly Keys can provide better odds for both coin drops and rare coin spawns. At 5 keys used during the floor with no INT, the odds for a coin drop are 52.5%, up from 50%, and coins have better odds to be more valuable.
  • + Wrath of Prime: The damage from Wrath of Prime will generate coins from enemies as long as Gold Steel is held in each room. This can grant a high yield of effectively free gold.

Weapons

  • + Missile Command: The long delay of the missiles give generous time for the player to switch back to the Gold Steel after firing, keeping the coin drop effect active.

Gods

  • = Champ God / War God: The increased amounts of enemies in each floor grant more opportunities for coin drop rolls.
  • - Love God: This god is heavily focused on spawning allies and as such, works against the Gold Steel's mechanics.

Cards

  • = Blood Money: Gold Steel can still harvest coins from enemies alongside the guaranteed drops from the Blood Money card.

Misc

  • - Allies: Enemies killed by allies will not drop coins on death while Gold Steel is held.

Tips

  • The Gold Steel is the weakest weapon in the game, 4x weaker than even the Prison Issue. Using this weapon as your main source of damage is not recommended.
  • Coins dropped from enemies killed by the Gold Steel have a chance to be silver or gold coins. Additionally, a high LCK stat can boost the odds for coins to be of higher grade.
  • The coin dropping effect activates even if other attacks reduced the enemy's health prior to the killing blow. With extensive knowledge of enemy health amounts, you can damage them with much stronger weapons and then finish them off with the Gold Steel to roll for a coin drop.
  • Buying additional mods for the weapon is discouraged, as the exorbitant gun shop prices can quickly bankrupt you for little benefit.

Notes

  • The coin drop on kill effect also applies to bosses.
  • Kills with Eye-Bots still yield coins on death.
  • Stingzone hordes only roll for a coin drop on the leader's death, and Duck-tron-lings never roll for coin drops. All enemies that infinitely spawn will also never drop coins.

Trivia

  • The Gold Steel's design may be a deliberate subversion of the common trope in which golden items and weapons in other media are disproportionately powerful, despite gold in real life being a poor material for such purposes.
  • Furthermore, the Gold Steel was initially added to the game for the explicit purpose of being sold in Gun Shops.[1] The weapon was later buffed to roll for coin drops on enemy deaths after a player suggestion.[2]
  • The design of the weapon's sprite is almost identical to that of the Quick-Draw, the only difference being the colors used.
